I had been in a similar hotel in Fort Lauderdale before, the Cabanas, which was also relatively quiet (even though… ), but with a lovely riverside location and a very comfy room. As for the “congeniality”, it ain’t no Palm Springs. On the other hand, I thought the room was pretty bare and clinical for $ 165 tax included (one night charged at booking time, OK, but the two other nights charged upon arrival, a practice that is as unpleasant as it is useless). As all these former retiree hotels in Fort Lauderdale that have been converted into kind of boutique hotels for an either straight or gay clientele, the Worthington/Alcazar is rather small and feels quite cramped, which is probably due in part to its lush tropical vegetation, so it’s not that bad I guess. Actually, it’s the same hotel, within the same compound, just another building.
So, with this in mind, I tried booking a room at the Worthington, but was told that only the “sister hotel”, the Alcazar, had free rooms. What I am looking for is a nice secluded place, with a pleasant pool, a minimum of comfort in the room and a little “congeniality” among guests.
Breakfast 8:00 -10:30 includes: - apples - cheerios and raisin bran - milk, orange juice, tea and coffee - Otis Spunkmeyer brand Bagels (cinnamon raisin and plain) with cream cheese, butter or jam muffins (blueberry and chocolate chip) danishes (cherry, apple and cheese) - Quaker Oatmeal cereal (plain, cinnamon roll and brown sugar)Ĭontrary to many reviewers, I don’t go to places such as the Alcazar, the Cabanas or the Coral Reef to be pampered by the staff and called by my name.
WIFI was easy to connect to and there is a computer in the office for those guests that do not have a laptop. There is an inroom safe for passports/wallets etc. Beach chairs and umbrellas are provided for the beach. Our room was renovated, spacious and clean. The water pressure is perfect for showering (as some other resorts you get a trickle and low water pressure). The bedding includes duvets which is a nice touch. There was a happy hour on Saturday with complimentary drinks. Guests ranged from young to old, singles and couples and all got along fabuously.
25 guests socializing in the evening during our stay so it was lively and didn't have a deserted feeling. The pool and whirlpool are lovely and the landscaping is lush and private. Our room attendant was very cheerful and funny. From check-in to small requests like extra towels, we found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating - which sets the atmosphere for a pleasant stay. The resort's owner appears to manage the property instead of having someone else do it and I think this positively reflects in the condition of the property, service and quality. We usually stay at another resort down the street but decided to try this place instead. I was impressed that the owner responds to some tripadvisor reviews which makes it obvious they care about their property and what people think - a good sign. Trying to coordinate time off from work along with room availabilty and airline pricing, we had to call and email the resort a dozen times - they were as friendly and helpful on the last correspondance as the first.
